Michael Kurtis Banks (born September 14, 1978) known professionally as King Kai, is an African American rapper, writer, and record producer. He is The co-founder and CEO of Legendary King Kai Beats. He has produced and overseen many albums, collaborations, and projects over the last 25 plus years.
King Kai has rubbed elbows with artists such as Bahamadia, Cappadonna of Wu-Tang, Joe Clair, and more.
King Kai started his career in the early nineties as a rap artist and writer for the group Hell’s Kitchen. A group that consisted of members from Boston, LA, and DC. Chasing a record deal the group ended up in Atlanta Georgia in the mid-nineties where King Kai emerged as Hell’s Kitchens’s primary producer.
King Kai’s influences of music came early in life, hanging out in the basement listening to his mother’s records, mesmerized by the melodies and the funky drum patterns. At an early age, he knew he wanted to produce music. Performing with his brothers and sisters in talent shows, even dancing on the stage of the Apollo… he knew that music was a part of him. King Kai’s production style incorporates his childhood, those records in the
basement, Ramsey Lewis, Mandrill, Issac Hayes, Aretha Franklin… those records helped shape his style of production and he is true to his sound, Soul Hop.
